You may have heard that Massachusetts is rapidly becoming the home of Hollywood East…lately there’s hardly a time that movie crews aren’t scouting the towns and cities of our fair state for movie shoot locations. In fact, one day recently Herb Chambers Lexus received a call from a “big time movie location scout” who was looking to shoot a movie scene in “the finest automobile showroom in the world”!

Guess what? They chose our spectacular new Herb Chambers Lexus showroom on the famous “Automile” in Sharon, MA! When this facility was finished I knew it was a bit “over the top” as they say…but nothing was too good for our loyal Lexus customers and guests– the true fans of this magnificent luxury vehicle brand. To get back to my story, it turned out that they wanted to shoot a few scenes for the upcoming 2010 movie: The Zookeeper starring Kevin James (the star of King of Queens & Paul Blart: Mall Cop) in our new showroom! Well, what could I say but “yes, when would you like to start?”

No sooner did I give them the “green light” but it seems all of Hollywood arrived! Set guys, lighting guys, camera crews, loads of “assistants”, tractor trailers trucks, miles of cable, electricians, carpenters and more …it was truly transformational… and transform they did! You see this movie plot called for several scenes in a truly ultra high-end exotic vehicle showroom, (This place even had a bar!) the ultimate “Auto Toy Store” if you will. Sprinkled among the set, were several carefully positioned rare and classic cars…Rolls Royce, Mercedes-Benz, Maseratis, Lamborghinis, a McLaren, Bentley’s, Maybach, a Porsche or two… and more. A car guy’s heaven!

The shooting and festivities went on for a few days…our Herb Chambers Lexus General Manager, Giovanni Tosti, and yours-truly even managed to be “extras” in a scene or two! I can only hope that we both don’t end up “edited” on the cutting room floor… no matter, we’ll look forward to seeing this hit when The Zookeeper premiers next year! And remember, at Herb Chambers… when it comes to your dream vehicle… We’ve Got It!

Somerville MA:

In an effort to keep Massachusetts’ roadways safer, the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security and the Massachusetts Department of Transportation are spreading the word about the National Sleep Foundation’s “Drowsy Driving Prevention Week.”

The far-reaching public awareness campaign, designed to educate drivers about the dangers of driving while drowsy, runs from November 2 to November 8, 2009. As we prepare to “fall back,” reverting to standard daylight savings time on November 1, drivers need to be even more alert as the change in sleeping patterns and roadway visibility could further impair driving skills.

The advice is basic: drive alert, arrive alive. Yet, according to the National Sleep Foundation’s 2005 Sleep in America poll, 60 percent of adult drivers – about 168 million people – say they have driven a vehicle while feeling drowsy in the past year, and more than one-third (103 million people) have actually fallen asleep at the wheel.

“At the Highway Division, our number one priority is safety,” said Luisa Paiewonsky, Administrator of the Highway Division of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. “Drowsy drivers are less alert, and more prone to accidents. It’s critical that we continue to educate drivers about the very real dangers of drowsy driving.”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says there are an estimated 100,000 police-reported crashes as the direct result of driver fatigue each year, resulting in more than 1,550 deaths, 71,000 injuries and $12.5 billion in monetary losses.

“Most of our residents are aware of the hazards of driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, but many are unaware of the dangerous effects of sleepiness behind the wheel. Like alcohol and drugs, sleep loss or fatigue impairs driving skills,” said Sheila Burgess, Director of Highway Safety for the EOPSS. “We all need to be aware that lack of sleep can have serious consequences on our lives and on the roadways.”

Sleep-related crashes are most common among teens, with more than 50 percent admitting to driving while sleepy or fatigued in the past year, as well as males under 26, shift workers and people with long work hours, commercial drivers, people with undiagnosed or untreated sleep disorders, and business travelers.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends drivers get 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night to maintain proper alertness during the day and urges drivers to pull off the road if they show signs of drowsiness or fatigue while driving. Before driving, every driver should consider whether they are:

Sleep-deprived or fatigued (6 hours of sleep or less triples risk)

Suffering from sleep loss (insomnia), poor quality sleep, or a sleep debt

Driving long distances without proper rest breaks

Driving through the night, mid-afternoon or when you would normally be asleep

Taking sedating medications (antidepressants, cold tablets, antihistamines)

Working more than 60 hours a week (increases your risk by 40%)

Working more than one job and your main job involves shift work

Drinking even small amounts of alcohol

Driving alone or on a long, rural, or dark road

Audi Burlington, which opened its doors in February, is conveniently located at 62 Cambridge Street on Route 3A, Exit #33 off Routes 128 & 95 in Burlington. The dealership features a magnificent showroom, drive-in valet reception areas, plenty of service bays and the latest designs to pamper customers. The dealership is located next to the new Herb Chambers Porsche of Burlington.

At the Grand Opening celebration guests enjoyed a special music performance by the band Cruisin’; food catered by Chef Anthony Ambrose; an official ribbon cutting ceremony and also had the opportunity tour the entire dealership and ask questions to service technicians and sales staff.

“We are very pleased that the President of Audi of America, so many of our customers and friends, and town officials from Burlington—all of whom made this brand new facility a reality—were able to join us on this exciting day to help celebrate our official grand opening,” said Herb Chambers.

“It has taken a lot of hard work and dedication from so many people to get us to this point, and we are appreciative of everyone’s efforts.

Here’s how it works. Customers buy a car or have some work done at one of the many Herb Chambers dealers, after which they are encouraged to share their experience on Herb’s blog. They visit the web site, key in a little information about themselves and their activity with the dealer, and they’re off and running. They can type anything – positive or negative – and when they click submit it shows up unfiltered on the site. Herb requires that his dealers answer all negative postings directly and quickly, offering solutions to customer issues and returning Herb’s reputation to good standing. The customer walks away feeling empowered, probably willing to deal with Herb in the future. Herb gets a living case study for his dealers’ customer service prowess, and leaves a string of satisfied customers in his wake. A win/win.

Looking at what Herb Chambers is doing, I can’t help but think – if a car dealer can leverage social media to strengthen its relationships with customers and help its business in the process, we all can do it. So what’s it going to take to put you into a new blog? Why don’t you think it over, while I go ask my manger if I can give you a deal.

The Herb Chambers Company continues to lead the way in even in these times of economic uncertainty. Full disclosure and transparency from a car dealership is for sure a paradigm shift in overall public perception while at The Herb Chambers Company it is obviously a priority and the standard. A visit to Herb Cares demonstrates a commitment customer relationships there are as many positive posts as negatives. With a clear path to problem resolution this company sets the example on how to use all the tools available to it! He’s Got It for sure!

I’m very impressed that Herb Chambers is embracing the online conversation. Not only having a blog, using it in an innovative way, and keeping it going, but going outside their own blog to comment on this one (and others, I’m sure). More companies, especially high-tech B2B companies, should take notes.

Wealth in Boston was not here. Traditionally, most of the wealth in Boston and its environs was tucked away behind the brick façades of Louisburg Square or in the creaky Victorians of Cambridge and Wellesley. Wealth, in this most Puritan of American cities, was seen as something the rich spent discreetly, and did not show off. Think Edward “Ned” Johnson III, an unassuming billionaire in his staid gray suits, walking from the flat of Beacon Hill to his Fidelity office downtown.

All that has changed.

When the Mandarin Oriental, Boston, a $300 million luxury hotel and residential complex, opens next week, the city will see an overt expression of wealth like it’s never seen before – and something that seems immune to the financial crisis bedeviling most Americans. It’s not only an entirely new level of opulence in luxury housing, but also a manifestation of a profound change in the way this city expresses its wealth.

The least expensive of Mandarin Oriental’s 49 condominiums runs $2 million; the priciest is $14 million. All sold when they were but a glint in the developers’ eyes, to buyers who saw nothing more than floor plans. The residences are like 49 urban versions of Weston mansions that somehow fit into two 14-story towers that rise above the hotel and a retail arcade. The developers, Robin A. Brown and Stephen R. Weiner, believe that the arrival of Mandarin Oriental – a fixture in such cities as New York, Geneva, London, and Tokyo – is a sign that Boston has hit the big time.

“We’re right in with the major cities of the world,” Brown said during an exclusive tour of the 490-foot-long complex before he hands over the keys to the new owners.

What does it say that so many super-rich people want to live under one roof, in a complex with hotel service, and located above Gucci, Italian fine linens purveyor Frette, and restaurant extraordinaire L’Espalier?

Over the last two decades, the booming technology and (until recently) financial industries have put large amounts of wealth into the hands of entrepreneurs, who tore down the old houses in the rich suburbs and built newer, bigger ones. Developers began building luxury condominium complexes, like the Ritz-Carlton and Atelier 505, around Boston.

And the city moved on from the old, iconic image of the Brahmins and their tradition against flaunting their wealth, said Edward L. Glaeser, director of the Rappaport Institute for Great Boston.

“There’s been an explosion of wealth and some of those people like to show it off,” said Glaeser. “That’s just a sign of the region’s success, and the people who have done phenomenally well.”

And now comes Mandarin Oriental. So what luxuries lie within?

Take the 20-foot-by-20-foot bathroom in a 4,500-square-foot, two-bedroom apartment that, as Brown said during the tour, sold “in the eights.” That’s $8 million to you. The shower alone could accommodate the Patriots’ offensive line, and it isn’t even the most elegant in the building.

That honor probably goes to the 8,300 square foot apartment with the rotunda-like wash area that features a massive round bathtub inlaid with imported tile and mood lighting that evokes the experience of a Roman palace.

Consider the floors in the various condominiums – African walnut, Indian rosewood, limestone, polished bamboo, intricate herringbone parquet, tiles imported from the Middle East. Home gymnasiums are the norm, though there’s a sprawling communal spa downstairs. One unit has a walk-in safe that would rival that of any bank on Boylston Street.

With the adoration of a loving parent, Brown, longtime hotelier to the rich and famous, pointed out the unique features of the development that he and Weiner spent more than a decade designing and building. He glided down the corridors, gesturing at his work like Willy Wonka displaying the wonders of his chocolate factory.

White marble windowsills? “A team of people flew to Italy for 10 days to hand select the stone,” Brown said.

Silently self-retracting kitchen drawers? “Standard package,” he said.

Polished mahogany entry doors, each one softly sanded for a unique look? “We spent four years developing them,” he said.

Brattle Street this is not. Though the condominiums all came with ultra high-end finishes, the general contractor created its own company, Dovetail, specifically to offer even more extravagant woodwork, and sold $46 million in upgrades to 43 of the buyers. Each unit, each floor, is unique, requiring massive amounts of steel to support the 12-foot ceilings and expansive rooms unsullied by beams and pillars. Twelve units are connected to private roof decks via personal elevators. There, owners can order from the hotel’s room service steaks or seafood prepared for grilling, and have housekeeping clean it up when they’re done.

As of last Friday, 23 of the sales had closed after walk-throughs that produced nary a complaint.

“We promised quality; we have to deliver,” Brown said.

The fact that the units sold so quickly, Weiner said, meant that there were enough people in the area who wanted and could afford this level of service.

“Clearly there was a need,” he said. “This is a major financial capital. There has always been wealth here, but it is growing.”

Mayor Thomas M. Menino agrees. “Boston has grown up. It sends a message that Boston is alive and well, and we want to compete with the cities of the world,” he said of Mandarin Oriental in a telephone interview. “This is part of the whole future.”

And the owners? They include Robert Epstein, a managing partner of the Boston Celtics; Charles K. “Chad” Gifford, the former chief operating officer of FleetBoston Financial Corp and auto magnate Herb Chambers. More than 40 buyers are from the Boston area.

“If you have a condominium in downtown Boston, the Mandarin is going to be the best there is. I think it will set a new standard,” said Herb Chambers, who is moving from a townhouse on Commonwealth Avenue.

“There have been several other high rises, but all of these pale by comparison to the Mandarin. It’s a full-service building and you’ll have beautiful service.”

It’s not that the super-wealthy have never had places to express their wealth, said Laurence J. Kotlikoff, a professor of economics at Boston University. But those were summer homes in Milton or mansions in Newport – and it takes a while to get to Newport.

“People are moving closer to the city because of these conveniences that didn’t exist in the past,” Kotlikoff said.

In a development such as Mandarin Oriental, “You look down the hall from somebody rich, meet people, you can do business together; you can hob-nob with other rich people.”

Of course, there are those who believe Louisburg Square mansions were flashy in their day, and some still prefer the Beacon Hill notions of wealth.

“I suppose the Mandarin is a good address, it has a kind of cachet among certain people,” said Karen Cord Taylor, former editor of the Beacon Times and the Back Bay Sun.

“There are the people of excess, and there are the people who could afford the excess but aren’t interested in it.”

Speaking of excess, how are the super-wealthy handling the chaos gripping the stock market, financial institutions, homeowners? Does it affect the people who populate Boston’s new cathedral of wealth the way it does the rest of us? Glaeser thinks it doesn’t.

“The people who are actually buying these apartments are not stretching to do so,” he said.

“Even if the tsunami causes a 30-percent decrease in their net wealth its not going to stop them from being to afford this.”

Drive to Web shaking up auto retailers

With today’s car buyers quicker to look online for deals than to shop at their local dealerships, auto dealers have been forced to change the way they do business.

Not only are they Internet-savvy, many car dealers have begun tailoring their businesses — and their mind-sets — to an online presence. Car dealers no longer expect their buyers to come from their immediate geographic areas, and the sales force no longer exclusively works the showroom floor.

Nowadays, buyers from just about everywhere track down the best deals they can through the Internet and are willing to travel to get them. Meanwhile, an entirely new type of car salesman is bringing them in: e-commerce experts who handle everything from responding to Internet inquiries from potential buyers to updating inventory on the dealership’s Web site.

Dealers and automotive industry organizations struggle to quantify exactly how much business is won or lost based on the Internet. Most agree, however, that the Internet is certainly helping dealers who have made it an integral part of their business. And dealerships that have learned to harness the Net are taking business from those who haven’t.

Herb Chambers Companies sold $348 million in 2006 solely through Internet leads, said Jay Gubala, e-commerce general manager at The Herb Chambers Companies.

“It just became pretty obvious that the Internet would change the way cars are bought and sold in America,” he said.

“Sales nationally have been relatively flat or up 5 percent, according to J.D. Powers, but New England’s sales are down,” Gubala said. “Yet, our sales are up 19 percent. Business is very good due to several factors including the Internet. You don’t necessarily go to your local dealer anymore to buy your car. You go where autodealer.com told you to go or where cars.com tells you to go.”

The Internet is not just a trend for new car sales. Joann Sueltenfuss, executive director of the Massachusetts Independent Automobile Dealers Association, estimated that 90 percent of used car sales come through the Internet.

“Today, customers do everything but test drive a car online,” she said.

Buyers, dealers and vehicles connect online in several ways, starting with the auto dealers’ and manufacturers’ Web sites and third-party Web sites, such as cars.com, which offer pricing and vehicle location information. The venerable car-buying guides Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds also are available online, listing nuts-and-bolts information.

Despite the popularity of the Internet among car buyers, many auto dealers have entered the online world with caution.

Some have feared losing local car buyers who will take their business wherever the price is lowest. They also have feared that consumers will educate themselves online about value and pricing only to whittle down a car dealer’s profits.

Further, some have resented that the Internet depersonalizes car sales, which traditionally have been conducted face-to-face.

“It rubbed us the wrong way initially,” said Dana Goodfield, owner of Dana Automotive in Northampton and president of the Massachusetts State Automobile Dealers Association. “But there is a silver lining. When people knew what a car cost us, they stopped offering us prices that were lower even than what we paid for the vehicle. An educated buyer is easier to negotiate with than one who isn’t.”

“Nearly 40 percent of dealers don’t respond to Internet leads,” said David Kain, a Kentucky-based specialist who trains auto dealers in Internet and business development. “Yet, one of the key variables consumers use the Internet for is to de-select a dealer. The consumer is thinking, ‘If they’re that bad on the Internet, imagine what they’d be like in person.’ And that’s how they knock dealers off their list. It’s a quiet erosion of the market for the traditional dealership. It’s very difficult for them to sell. Floor traffic is becoming very light. You can go into a dealership now and see few people on the lot.”

The Internet is speeding up the sales process: Dealers who focus on their Internet sales leads can respond quickly to large numbers of online queries, as long as they have the staff in place.

“I have the one-30 rule: within one minute of a lead coming in, they get a template response to their e-mail and, within 30 minutes, they get a personal call,” said Edward Naczi Jr., former head of e-commerce at Honda North and Kia of Danvers.

Even the auto dealers that are the most gung-ho about the Internet express caution about the accuracy of information car buyers obtain online. Several dealers shared a similar experience: the buyer who bargains for a new vehicle based on the trade-in value of his current car, which he calculated by typing information into a Web site.

Yet, when a dealer calculates a lower trade-in value for the same vehicle based on industry standards, customers are disappointed — and sometimes worse.

“The Internet is not foolproof,” said Rick Mastria, owner of Mastria Buick, Pontiac, and GMC in Raynham. “The Internet can be a guide, but it can just as easily be off the mark.”

Herb Chambers has taken the wheel at Foreign Motors West and he plans to drive the luxury auto dealer’s expansion plans forward in MetroWest.

Chambers finalized the deal yesterday afternoon with the employee-owned company led by President Fred Tierney. The sale price was not revealed.

The purchase of Foreign Motors West’s five dealerships that sell BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Land Rover, Bentley and Rolls-Royce vehicles expands Chambers’ auto empire to 38 dealerships and more than two dozen brands.

“We sell everything now from Vespa motor scooters to Rolls-Royce,” Chambers said in an interview yesterday with the Daily News.

With “great confidence” in the luxury car market, Chambers said he will move ahead with Foreign Motors West’s plan for a new BMW dealership on Rte. 20 in Sudbury and a renovation of the company’s headquarters at 253 North Main St. (Rte. 27) in Natick. The latter location currently sells both BMWs and Mercedes-Benz.

“We plan on certainly growing the business. We think there’s a huge opportunity out there,” Chambers said.

Foreign Motors West was founded by the late Thomas Mix in 1970 and fully acquired by employees in 2003. It also operates Land Rover MetroWest on Rte. 20 in Sudbury and separate Bentley and Rolls-Royce dealerships in Wayland.

Tierney, who has worked for Foreign Motors West since he was hired as general manager in 1987, said it was the right time for the employees to sell. About 300 of the company’s 360 employees had ownership stakes.

“It was a prudent business decision based on the fact that we have quite a bit of expansion that we’re looking forward to to grow the business,” said Tierney, who lives in Franklin. “It made sense to sell to Herb because he has the proper attitude in treating customers and the wherewithal to do the expansion.”

Tierney said Foreign Motors West may have been the only auto dealership in the world that was fully controlled by its employees. The Honda North dealership in Danvers is another employee-owned auto business but it is not 100 percent owned by workers.

No layoffs are expected as a result of the Foreign Motors West buyout. “My plan is to keep everybody. What I’m hoping is they’ll need more,” Chambers said.

Chambers plans to invest $100 million in Foreign Motors West over the next two years. A parcel in Sudbury has already been purchased and Chambers may hire Suffolk Construction Co. Inc. – the Boston outfit that’s nearly done building Chambers’ $30 million Lexus dealership in Sharon – for the BMW job.

With the acquisition, Chambers said he now expects to top $2 billion in sales this year by dealing 50,000 cars and trucks.

Foreign Motors West sells about 3,000 cars a year. Only a few hundred Bentley and Rolls-Royce vehicles are sold each year, given their high (heading toward $200,000) price tags.

The Rolls-Royce dealership on Main Street in Wayland is the only one in New England and one of only 30 nationwide. The nearest Bentley dealer is in Warwick, R.I.

Hank Allessio, an auto industry analyst at Walden Consultants Ltd. in Hopkinton, said Chambers is making a smart move by acquiring the more profitable luxury brands.

“The margins tend to be larger, and the parts and service and the back shop are higher proportionally than domestic dealerships,” he said.

Chambers, who lives in Boston and has a home in Old Lyme, Conn., also sells high-end Porsche and Audi cars. He bought his first car dealership – a Cadillac showroom in New London, Conn. – in 1985 and now claims to be the largest automotive dealer in New England.

2008 Saab Owners Convention -Herb Chambers Saab

August 26th, 2008 by Ryan – 1 Comments

Sunday, August 24th marked the conclusion of the 2008 Saab Owners Convention after two full days, on both Friday & Saturday.

For those who woke up extra early that morning, which were approximately 25-30, we got to see the same Saab 9-3 Convertible “Recycle” ad again, but we also got to see the second “work in progress” television ad that featured the Saab USA 9-3 Sport Sedan XWD that we could not see the night before. In addition, to these two new television ads, we also got to see a very well done 1 minute 30 second promotional video. This promotional video, that I believe should be an ad, albeit shortened of course, excluding less critical components. I see this as another ad contender because it encompassed all of what Saab stands for, finally representing the “Saab brand pillars” as Jay Spenchian first referred to them as. If this was also the work of the folks at McCann-Erickson, being their 3rd video overall, congratulations, you are well on your way!

As the videos ran their course, the classic 2008 “Saab Round Table” took place. This year, unlike the past years namely 2006 and 2007 where they were filmed, Stephen Goldberger, formerly of Nines Magazine, MC, emphasized that there was to be no videotaping, audio recording nor photographing this candid discussion between the folks at Saab Automobile USA (Steve Shannon, Jan-Willem & John Libbos) and the participants at the 2008 Saab Owners Convention. While I understand the request, I am surprised that that they would be requesting this because if anything critical was to be said, it certainly would not be stated in public anyways such as when and where a product would be released or what the new 9-5 will look like.

In the 52 minute 2008 Saab Round Table, Steve Shannon again responded to Rick Wagoner’s comments as he did the night before, where he indicated that Saab in Europe is doing well, Saab USA has some challenges due to currency exchanges and other economics, but will be shortly in a better position to become profitable just as Saab Automobile is in Europe.

Other questions and answers involved the existing dealership network, future products as well as advertising and marketing as well as details about availability and the possibility of creating a business case for opening up specifications for vintage parts from Saab Sweden that Saab Cars Musem Curator, Peter Backstrom chimed in on.

The final chapter of the event this Sunday concluded with the parts auction by John Moss ranging from rare Saab 900 spoilers to play toys and miniature model cars, it seemed like there was something for just about everyone and no price was too low!

As I made my way outside after the parts auction, I met up with Alex of Herb Chambers Saab, a Saab History sponsor, who was showcasing a beautiful 2008 Saab 9-3 Turbo-X, which was a great way to wrap up the 2008 Saab Owners Convention celebrating 30 years of the Saab Turbo with none other than this special limited production Saab Turbo.

At approximately noon, the weekend of activities came to an end, and all were packed in advance and departed leaving the 2008 Saab Owners Convention as a not too distant memory.
